Wellness Policy
What is a Wellness Policy?
A Local School Wellness Policy is a district-wide framework that supports student health, well-being, and academic success by promoting healthy eating habits and regular physical activity. The policy helps create a school environment where students can learn, grow, and thrive.
Federal law requires all school districts participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program to maintain a Local School Wellness Policy. Originally established through the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004 and strengthened by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, these policies are designed to improve student wellness and address childhood obesity.
Because wellness needs vary from community to community, each school district develops its policy locally to reflect the unique needs of its students, schools, and families.
