We are pleased to offer two health insurance options through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts: the Network Blue New England Deduction HMO Plan and the Blue Care Direct Deductible PPO Plan.  The City of New Bedford contributes 75% of the total premium cost, while employees contribute 25% through payroll deductions.   • The HMO plan offers in-network coverage only throughout the New England states and requires referrals from a primary care provider to see specialists.  Employees enrolling in the HMO Plan are required to select a Primary Care Physician (PCP) at the time of enrollment.

  • The PPO plan offers access to Blue Cross Blue Shield national network with no referrals for flexible coverage.   To be eligible for the PPO plan, plan members must prove that they live or support dependents who live outside of the New England states for more than 6 months of the year.  Plan members will need to complete an Annual Residency Affidavit to enroll or continue in the PPO plan.

    Behavioral health resources are available through Blue Cross Blue Shield.  If you or a family member is experiencing a behavioral health crisis, Well Connection is available for case management and behavioral health visits.

    Pediatric Dental

    Dental Blue Pediatric Essentials are included in your Blue Cross Blue Shield HMO medical coverage for dependents through age 12.  The following routine care coverages include:

    • Dental exams
    • Cleanings (twice per calendar year)
    • Preventative Services
    • Diagnostic Services
