Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program

The Goal

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a federally assisted program providing free fresh fruits and vegetables to children at eligible elementary schools. The goal of the FFVP is to introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables, to include new and different varieties, and to increase overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce among children. The FFVP also encourages healthier school environments by promoting nutrition education.

Exploring Fruits and Veggies

FFVP students consumed more fruits and vegetables than nonparticipating students. The results indicate that FFVP increased average fruit and vegetable consumption among students in participating schools on FFVP days by approximately one-third of a cup per day. The 0.32 cup increase consumed was mostly fruits rather than vegetables.

Fighting Scurvy

FFVP students consumed more carbohydrates, beta carotene, vitamins A and C, and fiber than nonparticipating students.
