Elementary World Languages
NBPS Elementary World Languages Program
NBPS elementary students participate in World Languages as part of their weekly specials rotation, meeting once per week for half the school year. Students are introduced to either Spanish or Portuguese through engaging, age-appropriate instruction designed to build foundational communication skills and cultural awareness.
The elementary program focuses on developing students at the Novice level. At this stage, students begin to understand and use familiar words and memorized phrases in meaningful contexts. Instruction emphasizes listening and speaking in the target language while gradually introducing early reading and writing skills.
Aligned with the 2021 Massachusetts World Languages Framework, the program centers on communication, cultures, connections, comparisons, and communities. Through songs, storytelling, movement, interactive activities, and cultural exploration, students begin developing the linguistic and intercultural skills that prepare them for continued language study in middle and high school.
